design your custom signet ring in 5 easy steps

Designing a custom signet ring might seem like a daunting task, but it’s really simple which is why we’ve broken it down into 5 super simple things to consider.

Whether you’re having a bespoke ring made, attending one of our signet classes, or carving one at home, here’s an easy guide to get you started!

1. shape

A good place to start designing is the shape of your signet. By shape, we’re mostly referring to the “face” of your signet - the flat bit with the engravings on.

You could go for something quite simple and classic like a round or square signet ring, or be brave and go for something with more personality like a heart or flower.

See the table below for our most popular signet shapes. However, this isn’t a definitive list - we’ve made ones in the shape of stars, clouds and even butterflies!

2. Engraving

It’s worth considering what, if any, engravings you’d like. As some engravings take up more space than others, you might be limited to the shape of your signet. For example a single word with more than 5 or 6 characters would fit better on a landscape oval, rather than a portrait oval shaped signet.

You can choose from a few classic styles of text. For something really personal, you can send us a sample of your handwriting for the engraving and we’ll copy it on to the signet.

Engravings aren’t limited to text either. We love an illustrative signet at Sken Studios! We can work together to bring your ideas to life.

It’s also an option to add small engravings to the shoulders of the ring for a little extra personality.

3. metal

Now you’ve considered your design, which metal would you like your ring cast in? We work with silver, 9ct gold, 18ct gold and platinum. Both 9 and 18ct rings are available in yellow, white or rose gold.

Silver is the most affordable option of the precious metals. It’s shiny white appearance and lower price makes it a popular choice.

Gold Vermeil is a cost effective option if you’d like gold coloured jewellery, without the solid gold price tag. We plate thicker than Gold Vermeil standard, however, no plating lasts forever. Especially when it comes to rings, which are more susceptible to knocks and scratches than earrings or necklaces.

Solid 9ct gold strikes a good balance between durablity and value. While it is less expensive than 18 carat gold, its lower gold content results in a slightly less rich yellow appearance.

In contrast, 18ct gold offers a richer color due to its higher gold content, providing enhanced wear resistance. However, this comes at a higher price point, which may not fit every budget.

Platinum is exceptionally durability and rarity. It offers a remarkable weight and a stunning shine that remains vibrant over time. Nevertheless, the premium price of platinum may be a consideration for some.

4. ring size

Size your finger

This is the easiest part of the process. Where possible, it’s advisable to get your ring professionally measured by a jeweller. Let the jeweller know if you’re commissioning a chunky ring as this can alter your sizing slightly.

The next best thing is to order a ring sizer to measure your finer at home. We sell them here - we’ll post them out with written instructions so you can measure yourself conveniently at home.

5. stones

This step is totally optional, so feel free to skip. However, adding gemstones can elevate your signet ring.

You can either provide your existing gemstones to incorporate into your design, or we can source them for you.

In the example here, the customer crafted her own signet ring during a workshop, then chose a sentimental heirloom diamond to be flush set into the centre of the signet.
